The Quiet Game

Donn offered the kids a newly minted, shiny gold, $1 coin to the child that could be quiet all way home from dinner (approx. 4 minutes). No one claimed the dollar, Brooklynn was quiet by Brooklynn standards but it didn't measure up for dad. Owen...he "paused" and "resumed" the game (actually using the words pause and resume) so dad disqualified him from the competition. Maybe next time.

The Literal Meaning...

Owen takes everything said very literally (this is a result of his Aspergers). This has created some very funny conversations and moments between the two of us over the years, here are just a few of my favorites...

...Owen got out of the shower and was drying off. I told him "Dry off the inside of you legs". He looked at me, puzzled, and said "That's impossible". I stared at him trying to figure out how he took it (dry off the inside of his legs "his bones"). I showed him, and said the "inner portion, between your legs. Goodness!!!

...We all pile in the car, I'm driving. Owen says "Hurry Up" (he needs to get home to play video games or something), I say "Keep your Shirt On". His response "my shirt is on!" I didn't even bother explaining.

The Value of Her Kisses...

Brooklynn, my "spirited" 5 year kindergartner, has started bargaining with kisses. At bed time for instance she will be on the couch and she will say "If you carry me to my room, I will give you a kiss in the morning" WHAT? She's putting a pretty high value on these kisses.... Why not just say, "Please carry me mommy". I hope this isn't foreshadowing what is to come in her teen years. Heaven help me!

Just Text Me:

At Girl Scouts, I had to confiscate Brooklynn's fake cell phone because she wouldn't stop fake texting. Now, what you need to know is, this isn't one of my old cell phones that I let her play with. This is a flip open cell phone made of paper, colored with crayons, with a keyboard handwritten on it (glitter on the front). It takes pretend pictures and everything. Her friend made it for her. How bad does she want to be 15? Apparently, VERY BAD!!!

"Mom, I'm Sick"

Owen came into my room a few nights ago around 12:30am. He said, "Mom, I threw up in my bed, I tried to sleep around it, but I can't" OH MY GOSH!!! What makes him think he has to sleep around throw up - Disgusting. He was sick three more times that night. The next morning I asked him "So do you think you can go to school?" (Of course I was kidding) His response, weakened by the sickness "I think I can make it" Such dedication this kid has. I told him I was kidding and sent him back to bed.
